Siobhan and Kyle in the Trees

Whenever I get to photograph pretty much anything in Discovery Park, I already know it’s going to be a damn good day. Located in the heart of Seattle, WA, Discovery Park has just about everything an outdoorsy person could look for in a photoshoot (or just a fun day out!) could offer.

The Trees Help to Tell Your Stories

The scenery isn’t the only thing that I love about Discovery. At the heart of my work is a great love for people – for getting to know them and telling their stories.

I always want to show the version of you that lives within the deepest, most sacred parts of yourself.

Discovery Park makes that possible. We wander through moss-covered forests, open meadows filled with wildflowers and blooming trees,

and eventually down to a wide, sandy beach with views of the iconic lighthouse, rocky outcrops, and, of course, Puget Sound.

That’s just my favorite route, though. The park is full of hidden gems and alternative trails that offer something new every time. If you're looking to create a meaningful experience with clients—one that flows from forest paths to ocean views—let me guide you through my favorite process.

The Discovery Park How-to:

01.

Start at the North Parking Lot.

While the beach is gorgeous, it isn’t the most accessible. There is a parking lot, but it is reserved for disabled folks or families with young children. That’s fine though! More time to adventure and bond with your clients.

Meet at the North Parking Lot, make sure to hit the bathroom (!), and begin the walk-in together. This is a great chance to get comfortable and connect before the shoot begins.

02.

Follow the South Beach and Hidden Valley Loop Trail.

It’s about 2.5 miles with a 330-foot elevation gain. You can follow the trail via AllTrails or rely on the signage throughout the park.

If you prefer not to complete the full loop, no problem. I often plan it so we take photos along the way down to the beach, then arrange for a friend or assistant to meet us at the lower lot. You can also just Uber back to the North Lot. It’s flexible.

03.

Lead With What Feels Good.

Throughout the session, pause at spontaneous, beautiful spots. S + K and I ran, played and found little bits of magic in the park. Whether it’s a pocket of light, a unique tree, or a stunning overlook, stop and enjoy any spot catches your eye.

The Perfect Opportunity for an Outfit Change!

Once we reached the beach, it was time for an outfit change and more fun in the sand! The beach is full of beautiful views and many different spots to get away from the crowds and create something beautiful.

Having such a beautiful open space allows clients the ability to breathe, to feel more comfortable being themselves. The diversity in my favorite little loop also lends itself well for an engagement session like this one. In these types of sessions, you are not just taking engagement photos – you’re building trust and getting to know the people whose most important moments you will be documenting.

That connection is an investment and so is choosing the right place to nurture it.
